About the RLC
- What is the Red Light Cafe?
The RLC is an event place that hosts
local entertainers. While it is mostly known for bluegrass music, they have a long tradition of hosting belly dance events.
The Nazeem Allayl dancers have been dancing there on and off since 2001; many of our own troupe members had their public performance debut here, including She'nez!
- What Food/Drinks are served
The RLC has a small kitchen and serves barfood, i.e. salads, pasta, nachos, etc. They have a variety of wine and beer, and among others Guiness on tap. Prices are reasonable.
- Do I need to buy a ticket in advance?
No, but we sold out every time (capacity is only 100), and it saves you 3 (three) dollars ($12 vs. $15/door). It also allows us to judge how many guests to expect and if we'll have walk-ins at all. Please note that there is no assigned seating at the RLC.
- What's the seating arrangement?
Unlike the Studio shows, there are no assigned seats; it's comes first, sits first, with the following exceptions: The first two rows are reserved for performers (to sit before/after their dance), and the front tables are reserved for special guests.
New - we will also have a dedicated "Habibi" table where the boyfriends and husbands of performers can sit together. Please tell Schadia if yours' is coming, so we have adequate space.

Interested in Performing?
- Who can perform there?
Any of our current students (i.e. currently enrolled in a 6 week course). See audition below.
- Performance length:
Maximum of 3 min performance length, please talk to Schadia if this is an issue
- Audition details:
Auditions will be held on
|
Tuesday, July 29th, 9:15pm @ Little 5 Points and
Thursday, July 31, 9:15pm @ Perimeter studio. |
Come in costume and stage makeup, and bring your music. We want to make sure you look appropriate and that you know the choreography. The format is the same as for the amateur night auditions, you simply perform your dance once.
What to perform? (Read carefully!)
You are to perform one of our Beginners' or Intermediate level choreographies, which you learned while attending & completing either a six week course or workshop at our studio.
Intermediate students can in special cases - and after consulting with Schadia - perform their own choreography; however, it must pass the "Nazeem Allayl flavor" test in addition to the audition quality test. We request that you do not perform 3rd party choreographies.
Selection:
Based on the number of students that want to perform and the quality of the performances and costuming, a selection is made. We are trying to get a fair representation of our student population a chance to perform, so we are balancing beginner and intermediate students, as well as troupe member performances. The "cut" is made by Schadia once the last audition has been held. You will be notified via email, so please check your email!
Hint - we have regularly Haflas (studio parties) where every student can dance in front of fellow students and female guests, just bring your CD and costume with you. If you performed your dance at a Hafla, and it was good and the girls liked it, your chances to make the RLC cut improve.
- Help us plan!
|
If you are seriously considering in performing, please and tell me what you are thinking of performing so that I can pencil in your intent (see next item) and plan the show. Thank you!
|
- Who does what?
The following choreographies are already "taken" - Vele ya Vele, Jasmine, Haya Gat Alaya, Mizmar, Nafs al makan, Zayna, Billies Blues, Farhanna Drum, Penubris.
I have currently two students who are looking for a partner to do a dance, please email me if you want to be teamed up.
Should multiple students be interested in performing the same dance, up to the first three to will perform it together. We will make the Perimeter studio available for practice on the two Saturdays before the show (during shopping hours 2:30-6pm, by appointment only, email or call for your slot.)
|
- How is the stage setup?
We will dance on a raised stage, which is smaller than @ a studio show, so we limit student group performances to three, and troupe performances to five.
- What costume do I need
Nothing fancy by all means, i.e. harem pants, coin sash, top, some earrings and you're good to go. You'll need shoes for sure, no barefoot dancing, and don't forget your caftan: It's a long way from the dressing room to the stage through the audience.
See pictures from the RLC Show June 22nd 2008
- Are there any tickets left?
Tickets go on sale for the general public on Saturday, July 26th (2:30pm @ Perimeter Studio). We will have at least two tickets/performer allocated at the $12 rate (depending on actual number of performers), plus priority on the waiting list.
